Bugs and Bats............

Photobucket
Seen more bugs this year? I know I have. If you have not heard or read about it yet you make want to read about what is going on with the bats. There is a fungus disease that they are contracting and it is sweeping across America killing thousands of them. Bats may not be on the top of your list as favorite animal, but they are a much needed part of our environment, and we know God created them for a purpose.
This is a great current events article that you can share with you children and stir up some interesting conversations, and get their views and opinions on what they think we should do about it.

  1. Thank you for sharing this very interesting information. We just moved to a very "widerness-y" area and there are lots and lots of bugs. Out of curiosity we are going to sit on the front porch in the evening and see if we are able to spot any bats flying around. I sure hope so... To me bats aren't the loveliest creatures, and they give me the creepy crawlies, but now I've come to realize how important they are in keeping the balance in nature.

I will share with you, what I think is a funny story. We have friends that live on 186 acres of property farther up in New York state. One time while visiting, our boys were by the pond and were calling out to me to come see something. Now the pond is a bit of a ways from the house, and it was dusk. So here I go walking calmly toward the pond when I noticed what I thought were lots of birds flying around. I thought it strange for birds to be flying around this late and so low. It bothered me some, but since it was kind of dark I kept on walking towards the pond. Then one of my boys came running to me very excited saying, "Look mom, look. Look at all these bats flying around! I froze dead in my tracks. These bats were flying low and there were so many of them. I panicked and went hysterical. I starting running as fast as I could, flaring my hands all around, shaking my head in hope that the bats would not get entangled in my hair and screaming, yes screaming. I made a complete spectacle of myself. It seemed as if I would never reach the house. The boys, of course, thought it was hilarious and still talk about it to this day anytime anyone mentions something about bats.

  3. You know, we've sat out a couple of times at night and haven't seen any activity of bats flying around. I'm not sure if we really can't see them or if they are just not in our area. We live close to a highway, maybe that has something to do with it.

Anyway, just thought I'd give you an update on our bat stake out.

    Blessings,
    Mrs. Teapot
